Two Poems by Sonnet Mondal
The Black Caravan and the Rope
I am tied to the wheels of a black caravan
Flowing like a dead eel fish
Upon the sands of the market where verses
Used to sell well.
I sowed some seeds where vultures pray
For showers of blood
And hunt for the flesh of prose.
Multitude of demons, never do they laugh
But smile the hellish satire
Upon my poverty and break my affluence
Into couplets screaming with ecstasy
For they form the sands which
Thrusts me forward.
The black caravan is my challenge
And the rope my destiny.
Belief in Harmony
I feel like balancing on razor-sharp edges of grasses
forced by the daily frustrations layering upon the green
carpet that sway and sing with peace
and drip in acid rain without complaints.
My soil has lost wonders and I crave to be a grasshopper,
sit with folded legs and pray.
Daily preaching and sermons peter out as vapours
in the factory fumes and I still try to thwart myself
from slipping of the edge for then the faith
of my fellows with be dinted, with the notion of harmony
crying beneath trees without leaves
standing as ancient skeletons.
My trade is to trust,
believe in the power of calmness and sanctity.
For now, I should not fall as my organs and devotion
will smash as glasses to break the composure.
With hands sometimes folded and open,
Just to pray, appeal and never scream
For the hour of novelty is to come and
It is to come soon.
