For five years, Metazen has provided daily stories and poetry from writers across the world- known, unknown and emerging. We began at a time when online literature felt undefined and we believe we helped to define it. We published daily, we tried to be aesthetically pleasing and we above all looked for writing that would reach out from your computer screen and give you a little, special oompf.

But after five years, we are taking a little break. I am moving on in life and things are changing so rapidly I am unsure how to balance my responsibilities. I may return to this site, I may not. At this point I don’t know.

So just in case I am dying, I’d like to thank our editors for their tireless work for the last five years: Marcus Speh, Julie Innis, Sheldon Lee Compton, DJ Berndt, Belinda Kalala, Declan Tan, Janey Smith, Len Kuntz, Riley Micheal Parker and Caitlin Galloway. The work of our editors is payless, at times thankless and always full of heart and dedication to excellence in writing. Without the editors this place couldn’t have existed and done all that it has. I am honoured to have worked with you. Thank you so much.

I’d like to make a special thanks to Christopher Allen who has served as co-manager of this site for many years and has really kept everything together. My original plan was to have Christopher take over Metazen in May, but due to unforeseen circumstances that was not possible. Christopher has been my rock as an editor and writer, he’s poured his heart into every space on this website. He helped to edit my own novel and is the one writer friend I’ve actually met in this world. Chris, bis später, I will miss you my friend.

To our fans, writers and readers  I want to thank you for dropping in every now and then, for your comments and support. My day has always consisted of a warm cup of coffee and a fresh page of Metazen. All I can say is that- it isn’t over, we’re just taking a break, figuring things out, looking at options.

So thank you and see you soon,

  1. I went through an introspection about half a year ago about my poetry. It was a dark time – but after a while I resolved to write again, and began writing speculative fiction, but without losing the poetry. Now I have short stories anthologized in six anthologies, and am writing my novel. I know that when you come back – it will be brilliant.

‘Metazen’ was one of the journals that made me realize that there is a literary renaissance, and it in electrons, on our computers and on our phones, that literature is not tied up to paper. I have you to thank for that realization, as well as all the editors at Metazen. You put a spotlight on so much writing that inspired me, your own and others. That became an inspiration to me. And wherever my writing journey takes me, I will always remember and be thankful.

May the wind always be at your back, and may the sun shine warm upon your face. The best is yet to come.
